Standoff at Oka 5 stars
"The 1990 standoff started with a flash of terrible violence and a sudden death at Kanesatake, a Mohawk community of about 1,500 people northeast of Montreal. The community sits side-by-side with the tourist village of Oka, on a scenic point where the Ottawa River meets the St. Lawrence. " "The land had been the subject of a legal battle since the 1950s. In March 1990 the Indians ran out of legal options to prevent the expansion. They set up a barricade and eventually strung barbed wire through the pine forest. Mohawk men donned masks and positioned themselves with rifles." "By the end of June the Oka town council won a court order to have the roadblock removed, and the following days were tense. The Mohawks had no intention of moving. A paramilitary group, The Warriors Society, was preparing for "war." To this day, no one's sure who fired the first shots on July 11. The one awful certainty: a policeman, Corporal Marcel Lemay was killed. Within hours there were about 1,000 police on one side of the barrier." "WebQuest Teams will be asked to focus on specific vantage points as they develop their conflict analysis."
